ENMU women sweep at WT tourney, improve to 4-1

CANYON — Treyanna Clay had 13 points, including a pair of baskets during a key third-quarter run, and Eastern New Mexico scored a 58-54 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Friday for the second win over the Thunderwolves in as many years at West Texas A&M's Thanksgiving Classic.

The Greyhounds routed New Mexico Highlands 89-54 Saturday to close out a 2-0 mark at the Classic, pushing the record to 4-1 before ENMU opens Lone Star Conference play Thursday at home against Midwestern State.

Friday (CSU-Pueblo) — Senior Shelby Jones had nine points and finished off a game the Greyhounds controlled much of the way, hitting 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds to play after Janaiya Davis' 3-pointer made it a one-possession game.

Jones missed the second shot, but the Thunderwolves (2-3) couldn't get a shot off in the closing seconds.

The Greyhounds pulled away in the closing 45 seconds, with freshman guard Zamorye Cox hitting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe for most of her seven points.

Clay, the Greyhounds' only double-figure scorer, put ENMU up for good during a back-and-forth third quarter. Following a fast break jumper by Khiya Adams to give the Thunderwolves a 36-35 lead, Eastern answered back with a 7-0 run, starting with a Dasia Johnson jumper. Clay scored the next two baskets, including a 3-point play on a layup opportunity created by a Jones steal.

Sophomore Alivia Lewis had seven points on just 3-of-10 shooting, but pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Saturday (NMHU) — The Greyhounds never trailed, as freshman guard Zamorye Cox got things going with consecutive 3-pointers. The Cowgirls answered 1:47 into the contest, but the Hounds responded but ripping off a 13-2 run early in the first for a 19-4 advantage.

Eastern led the Cowgirls (2-5) by as many as 41 in the fourth.

The Hounds shot a 66 percent in the first half, including an 8-of-12 effort from beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Jena Mehlbrech led four Greyhounds in double-figures, scoring a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting Kamirah Decker also had a career high, posting 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Tilasha Okey had 12 points, and a season-high four assists for Eastern, while Johnson had 11 points and dished out six assists.

Sophomore Alivia Lewis just missed a double-double with eight points and 13 rebounds.

The total was the highest for the ENMU women since beating Texas A&M-Commerce 90-78 in 2014.
