'Cats suffer theft

HOBBS — The Clovis junior varsity football team ended its season a few weeks ago, but most involved with the Wildcats are still upset over the unexpected costs of an Oct. 25 win at Hobbs.

The Wildcats entered the locker room jubilant after their 42-22 victory, but soon a large group of players found their stuff was missing. According to a Thursday report from the Hobbs News-Sun, four Hobbs teenagers were alleged to have entered the locker room during the game and stolen more than $4,600 in cash and valuables.

The four suspects, who ranged from 15 to 16 years old, were identified on surveillance video entering the Clovis locker room.

The News-Sun did not name the suspects, but noted at least three of them were Hobbs football players — two junior varsity and one varsity. The newspaper reported that varsity player was suspended for Hobbs’ contest against Mayfield, but was back on the team the following week.

According to the News-Sun, the Hobbs Police Department incident report detailed eight Clovis football players as victims. Items reported stolen included three iPhones, a wallet containing $300 in cash and four pairs of expensive headphones.

None of the items have been recovered, and there was no indication from police reports whether any arrests were made. The police report cited an offense of larceny between $2,500 and $20,000.

Efforts by The News to contact the HPD regarding the case have been unsuccessful.

Clovis Athletic Director Lonnie Baca had no comment on the incident Saturday morning.
