1960: Parker Woodul, Portales High School's vocational agriculture teacher since 1938, was named teacher of the year by area service clubs.

The Texas A&M graduate and World War II veteran came to Portales from Hagerman.

He remained a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.

1952: Mary de Shazo died. Today a Muleshoe elementary school is named in her honor.

She was known for wearing a red dress during the first week of school so her students would recognize her at recess.

1926: A bill signed in Washington created the American Highway System, which led to the creation of Route 66 connecting Chicago with Los Angeles.

Tucumcari for five decades thrived on the traffic attracted by "The Mother Road."
