Clayton: 'Scariest' city in New Mexico

CLAYTON — Hollywood says any publicity is good publicity. Being designated New Mexico’s “scariest town” might not be what Clayton had in mind, but the business owners probably won’t mind if it brings in more tourism.

Albuquerque has held the honor, but this year Clayton was voted the top award in a survey by New Mexico Tourism.

For believers:

• The Herzstein Memorial Museum has a ghostly lady wandering the halls and rooms.

• Hotel Eklund has its ghostly lady visiting guests in the halls.

• Then there is the Union County Courthouse, where Black Jack Ketchum lost his head to an unfortunate miscalculation by the hangman. Who wouldn’t be upset and stick around to scare the visitors?
