1963: Area trick-or-treaters were tricked by the weather.

Just after dark, "when witches (were) riding their broomsticks," rain began to fall across the region. Soon, the rain turned to the season's first snowfall, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

"Most of the trick-or-treaters, clad in skimpy costumes of skeletons and scarecrows, had to be whisked home by their older brothers and sisters. Many of them still got soaked," the newspaper said.

One tearful 6-year-old Clovis boy told his sister, "All I got so far is an apple." His sister replied, "That's better than pneumonia."
