ENMU's board of regents to hear remodel update

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents will hear an update on a remodel at the president’s residence during Friday’s meeting.

ENMU-Portales President and Chancellor of the three-college system Jeff Elwell said asbestos was discovered in the walls, floors and ceilings in all of the original areas of the home.

Regent Terry Othick is slated to give a report on the remodel, including cost estimates and options for the asbestos removal, Elwell said.

Other items on the agenda for the board meeting, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the regents room on the ENMU-Portales campus, include:

• The board will hear an update on changes to the campus’ alcohol policy.

Last year the board approved the sale of beer and wine at events on campus, including weddings and fundraisers. Elwell said the university has updated its alcohol policy to be in line with the requirements for a governmental liquor license, should the state approve ENMU’s application.

Elwell said alcohol would not be sold at concession stands during Greyhound athletic events.

• The board will hear financial reports from fiscal year 2017-18 from each campus.

• The board is expected to take action on an item that, if approved, would designate the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as an official holiday.

Elwell said currently students and faculty have the day off, but staff are required to use a vacation day.

• Elwell will provide an update to the board on a proposed recreation and wellness center. Elwell said he is hoping to include some details from an ongoing student survey, which ends Thursday, regarding students’ preferred method to pay for the facility.
