Clovis' Gray tabbed as Lobo's New Mexico Man

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis native Micah Gray will be honored this week by the University of New Mexico football team as its “New Mexico Man” of the week.

The award, established by coach Bob Davie, designates a current or former walk-on player from New Mexico to lead the team onto the field carrying the New Mexico flag. A player is designated for each home game, as well as any game the Lobos play at New Mexico State.

The Lobos (2-1) host Liberty on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.

Gray, a redshirt freshman, will have a patch designating the award on his jersey and an interview will play on the team scoreboard where he discusses the honor.

Selection criteria includes dedication, work ethic, team spirit and unselfishness that exemplify both the Lobo program and the state.

“Walk-ons are critical to our success here at UNM,” Davie said during the original implementation of the program. “I have tremendous respect for all of them and want to have a way to recognize their importance and contributions to the program.”

Gray has played in all three of New Mexico’s games this season, and has carried the ball seven times for 23 yards. Most of his action has come on special teams, where he has recorded a pair of tackles.
