Clovis school board to hear bond update

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education will hear an update on the district’s sale of $7 million in general obligation bonds during tonight’s board meeting.

Superintendent Jody Balch told The News on Monday that last week’s sale featured seven or eight bidders and CMS “got a decent rate.”

“We probably did as well as we can do for the time,” Balch said.

Balch noted that the district’s rating was not affected by the state’s credit rating being downgraded.

Balch said funds from the sale of the bonds will go towards parking lot improvements districtwide, including at Clovis High School and Mesa Elementary.

Other items on the agenda for the 5:30 p.m. meeting today at the administration building at 1009 Main St. include:

• A vote on changes to the board’s policy regarding staff conduct with students.

The changes were introduced to the board at its Aug. 28 meeting and specifically outline inappropriate interactions between school employees and students including providing alcohol or drugs to students or engaging in sexual activity.

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Kerry Parker said during the Aug. 28 meeting that the changes were recommended by the district’s insurance authority last year.

Several other changes will be introduced to the board tonight, including the establishment of requirements for the acceleration of students in grades K-3, which Parker said is to bring the district in alignment with changes to state law.

Other policy introductions include establishing written notification to parents for students found not to be proficient in literacy.

Board policy changes are introduced at the meeting prior to the board voting on them.

• A vote on the donation of unused music equipment to Roswell Public Schools and the disposal of two damaged sousaphones.
