ODESSA, Texas — Gabriel Peres and Aderi Arthur-Dede scored less than five minutes apart, and Eastern New Mexico made the most of a shooting advantage to top Texas Permian Basin 3-1 in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams.
William Sutton also added a goal for the Greyhounds (2-2, 1-0), who outshot the host Falcons 20-11 — including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
After the Falcons (1-3, 0-1) struck first with Santi Morales’ goal in the 21st minute, it was all Greyhounds. Peres knotted the score on a penalty kick less than six minutes later, and Arthur-Dede scored off a cross pass from Jesus Garcia in the 31st minute.
Sutton added the insurance goal in the 62nd minute when he cleaned up a rebound off Falcon goalkeeper Lucas Gomes.
Ross Dalton made two saves for the Greyhounds.
With the win, Eastern matched its division win total from last season (5-11-2 overall, 1-5 division).
The Greyhounds continue their short Texas road trip Saturday against Lubbock Christian in a noon MDT tilt.
