Colorado Mesa drops Hounds to 0-2

Mavericks roll out 31-0 first half, hold off ENMU rally for 34-21 win

PORTALES — Senior Eystin Salum accounted for 256 yards of offense and a touchdown, and 25th-ranked Colorado Mesa rode a dominant first half to a 34-21 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday night at Greyhound Stadium.

The Mavericks (2-0) ran off the game's first 31 points, with Jonathan Beverly going for a 21-yard rushing touchdown on Mesa's opening drive. Pailate Makakona scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 4 yards, while Salum completed a 37-yard touchdown to Peter Anderson. The Mavericks took advantage of three Greyhound turnovers, including an interception with five seconds left in the first half to set up Lucas Ruiz-Diaz for a 25-yard field goal.

Colorado Mesa would only get one more score, a 43-yarder by Ruiz-Diaz, the rest of the night as he Greyhounds (0-2) made a furious comeback effort. They got on the board with 4:19 left in the third on a 5-yard run by Tayshuan Gary, After holding on the ensuing possession, the Greyhounds chipped further into the lead with a 57-yard touchdown run by junior Wyatt Strand.

Paul Terry's 18-yard scoring run made it a 34-21 game with 7:17 to play, but the Mavericks ran off the rest of the clock with a nine-play drive that featured a pair of third-down conversions.

The Mavericks outgained Eastern 437-345, including a 184-18 advantage in the air. Salum was 11-of-21 for 184 yards, and also ran 13 times for 72 yards. Terry ran 33 times for 145 yards to lead Eastern New Mexico.

The Greyhounds remain at home, and go from a frying pan to possibly a hotter frying pan when No. 1 ranked Texas A&M-Commerce comes to Portales on Saturday night.
