Service to Mexico big deal for Sunport, state of New Mexico

August 26, 2018

The Albuquerque International Sunport is once again living up to its name.

At least it will be in just three short months.

Volaris airlines is beginning nonstop service from Albuquerque to Guadalajara, Mexico.

It will be the first time international service is available at the Sunport since 2009, when AeroMexico ended its service from Albuquerque to Chihuahua.

Volaris plans to begin the nonstop service Nov. 17.

The three-hour flight will be available twice a week.

This is a big deal for the Sunport and Albuquerque — because, as Mayor Tim Keller points out, making Albuquerque directly accessible to international markets is a critical component to tourism and economic development.

And Nyika Allen, the city’s aviation director, notes that when a carrier enters a new market, it’s making a multimillion-dollar investment.

The city is offering financial incentives to Volaris to offset some of the costs of launching service here.

Keller credits the city’s aviation and economic development departments, and representatives from the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce for the successful pitch, saying they worked tirelessly to make this happen.

We hope the city is able to build on this win and expand the airport’s international service.
