LSC poll votes to give women’s team 134 points
RICHARDSON, Texas — The Lone Star Conference women’s cross country preseason poll is a lot like one of its races — a few clear winners, followed by a tightly contested middle of the pack.
Put Eastern New Mexico’s women in the latter category in the poll, released Tuesday by the conference. The Greyhounds are tabbed to finish sixth, having finished with 134 points from a voting panel comprised of coaches, sports information directors and media representatives for the 10 competing schools (Texas Woman’s does not compete in cross country).
The Greyhounds were just topped by Angelo State (137) and Texas A&M-Commerce (149). Tarleton State took 15 of the 26 first-place votes to amass 248 points. West Texas A&M was second with 231 points and seven first places, and Midwestern State scored 212 points and took the remaining four top votes.
Eastern was followed on the poll by Western New Mexico, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Permian Basin and Cameron.
The Greyhound men ended up in a tie for seventh place with Cameron. West Texas A&M scored 15 first-place votes and 207 points to beat out Tarleton State (201 points, nine first-place votes). Rounding out the poll are Texas Permian Basin, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Angelo State, Cameron and ENMU and Western New Mexico.
The season for the Greyhound men and women starts Sept. 14 at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock.
Men’s soccer picked 11th — Following a rough go of it in the 2017 season with a 3-11 mark in Heartland Conference play, the ENMU men were picked Tuesday for a similar fate.
The Greyhounds are picked to finish 11th overall in the Heartland Conference, according to the poll released from the Waco, Texas office.
Midwestern State is favored to win the conference for the third-straight year. The Mustangs took 22 of a possible 24 first-place votes following their 20-1-3 campaign last season.
St. Edwards (254 points) and West Texas A&M (241) each picked up a first-place vote. They were followed in the poll by Texas A&M-International, St. Mary’s, Rogers State, Texas Permian Basin, Lubbock Christian, Newman, Dallas Baptist, ENMU and Oklahoma Christian.
The Greyhounds open the season Aug. 30 at home against Southern Nazarene.
