Clovis American's run ends

Loss to Texas West ousts team from regionals

ALBUQUERQUE — It was a magical run for Clovis American’s 13-14 Junior League softball team.

Tuesday, though, it came to an end after the purple and white lost their second game of the day, falling to Texas West 6-0 at the Isleta Reservation in the regional tournament semifinals.

Clovis American, sent to the loser’s bracket by Sunday’s 11-0 loss to Texas East, couldn’t afford another defeat in the regionals. The team did collect two victories since that loss, routing tournament host New Mexico Westgate 20-1 on Monday, then outlasting Louisiana 10-7 on Tuesday morning to earn the afternoon game with Texas West, with a spot in today’s championship game at stake.

In the Tuesday-morning victory, Marisa Lopez pitched a full seven innings, striking out seven in the process. Jenice Hudson paced the Clovis American offense with four RBIs. Skylar Schuette, Lopez and Abigail Morris added two hits apiece.

Clovis American had won its first game of the tournament, beating Colorado 18-0 on Saturday.

The purple and white preceded that with a dash through the New Mexico State tournament, outscoring its opponents 53-5 to repeat as state champions.
