Dumping ordinance up before Portales council

PORTALES — The Portales City Council tonight will consider an ordinance regarding solid waste disposal, one that “the council’s been pushing us to develop,” according to the city manager.

“The current ordinance is that you can dump outside of the dumpster; that’s created a problem and a dilemma for the pickup,” Sammy Standefer told The News. “The new ordinance is structured to prohibit dumping anywhere but inside the dumpster.”

Ordinance 735, “providing for a general system of garbage collection and the disposal thereof,” also provides for penalties for offenders, but Standefer said there would still be options for “bulk pickup.”

The council will also hear presentations from the city’s finance director including a fourth quarter financial report, the final budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19 and a resolution to approve that budget.

Per state law, a public hearing was held on that budget and took place Monday afternoon, Standefer said.

“We had a few people show up, but I didn’t hear any questions or anything,” he said of the hour-long meeting. “The normal budget looks pretty routine. We do expect to get $2.3 million to redo the tanks (water piping) up at Johnson Hill.”

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Building Council Chambers, 200 East 7th Street in Portales.
