Construction projects top Portales schools agenda

July 10, 2018

PORTALES — Funding for a pair of construction projects top the agenda at today’s Portales Municipal Schools Board of Education meeting.

PMS received $1,665,294 in capital outlay from the Public Schools Capital Outlay Council to remodel the old wing at Brown Early Childhood Center. Superintendent Johnnie Cain said the renovation will include adding restrooms to each classroom and heating, cooling and electrical improvements.

Cain said the total cost of the project is estimated to be around $2.7 million and the district’s 26 percent match to the capital outlay is $585,103, so the district will need to come up with around $700,000 more in funding for the project. It’s estimated to take about nine months and be complete by 2019.

The district also received funding from the Department of Transportation for sidewalk and parking lot improvements at James Elementary. Cain said PMS received around $101,00 from DOT and the total cost of the project is around $268,000.

Also on the agenda for today’s meeting, scheduled for noon in the board room of the L.C. Cozzens Administrative Offices, 501 S. Abilene:

• Adoption of board policy revisions presented at last month’s board meetings. The majority of the changes deal with transportation. Other changes include students cannot have an “F” grade to remain eligible for athletics and a violation of the school’s drug policy will result in a suspension for 50 percent of the remaining sports schedule, up from 20 percent.

• Title IV grant application. Cain said some of that money will go toward a truancy counselor at the high school.

• Budget adjustments.
