Attorneys to read Declaration of Independence

CLOVIS — Before lighting the grills and settling in for fireworks, local attorneys want to give the public some time with the founding document of Independence Day.

At 11 a.m. July 3 outside courthouses in Clovis and Portales, defense and prosecuting attorneys of the 9th Judicial District will lead readings of the Declaration of Independence.

"We are starting a tradition," Clovis public defender Leah Hutchins told The News of the first such event in the district. "It is important to remember the reason for the day off — freedom and independence."

The work of reading the nation's originary text will be distributed across attorneys of the local bar, with district judges invited to participate as well. District Attorney Andrea Reeb has RSVP'd, as has Mitch Mender from her office. Some public defenders are also enlisted, Hutchins said, and local bar president Tye Harmon is assisting with organizing.

All in the public are invited to witness the live reading, with the Clovis event at 700 Main St. and the Portales presentation at 109 West 1st St.
