1978: And in sports news:

• Aztec Bowl, located at 120 Maple St. in Clovis, boasted "newly refinished lanes" and planned to reopen at 9 a.m. on June 16. "Open bowling" was available anytime except for 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays.

• Eastern New Mexico University's third annual Sunshine Girls Basketball Camp was expecting almost 200 participants. The camp offered "special training" in the jump shot, pressing defense, guard play and post play.

• The San Francisco Giants' Randy Moffitt struck out Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski to preserve Vida Blue's 2-1 win over the Phillies. Moffitt needed just seven pitches.

• Golf legend Jack Nicklaus was upset about changes to the course at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado, on the eve of the U.S. Open.

"We have no way to relate our skills with those of the great players of the past," Nicklaus told The Associated Press.

"Why is it a crime to shoot a low score in the Open?"

Andy North won the tournament, shooting 1-over-par 285.
