Portales gets three North-South softball selections

PORTALES — After winning a district title for a 10th-straight year and finishing with a perfect league record, not to mention a valiant effort at the 4A state tournament earlier this month, it should come as no surprise that three Portales senior softball standouts will represent the Rams at this year's 2018 North-South All-Star game at the University of New Mexico.

The game, which pits the best senior softball players from around the state against one another, will feature Devyn Lopez, Kim Hay and Racquel Moreno-Herrera. The trio will represent the South team in Albuquerque, and will play three games over June 8 and 9, with a home run derby competition in-between.

Hay was the top slugger for the Rams (22-11, 12-0) in 2018, smacking four home runs in 33 games. The outfielder batted .392 and led the way with 51 RBIs, and was frequently used as the team's three-hole hitter.

Lopez came into her senior season as the team's 'best all-around hitter,' according to coach Nathan Dodge, and did not disappoint. The third baseman batted .402 with a team-high 46 runs, while leading the way in hit by pitches (14) and tying for second in RBIs (34).

Moreno-Herrera, on the other hand, was a small-ball weapon. The slap-hitting lead-off hitter batted .353 with an .810 OPS. On the base paths, she recorded seven stolen bases, while recording 19 putouts from her outfield spot.

Thanks to their contributions, the Rams won a 10th-consecutive league title, before bowing out in the consolation round of the 4A tournament this past season.

Over their high school careers, Lopez, Hay and Moreno-Herrera combined to go 84-37, with three-straight 20-win seasons and remarkably just one district loss (39-1) in four years.
