ENMU's DeLaCruz gets regional honor

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico second baseman Alex DeLaCruz was announced Wednesday as a first-team selection on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s South Central Regional team.

This is DeLaCruz’ first regional honor of the year, after receiving ABCA/Rawlings and D2CCA regional awards last season.

The senior recently received his second-consecutive selection to the All-Lone Star Conference team. He was fourth in the league in batting (.380), while finishing second in the LSC in hits (70), third in stolen bases (26) and top 10 in five other offensive categories.

DeLaCruz leaves ENMU with the second-highest career batting average (.410) behind Shane Shallenberger, and went 2-for-5 with an RBI in ENMU’s 7-4 win Thursday over Angelo State. It was the first LSC tournament win in school history.

During his two seasons at ENMU, the Greyhounds won 56 games — the highest two-season total since the 1995 and 1996 ENMU squads.
