Clovis' Williams plans to leave Texas A&M

Early graduation means guard can transfer without penalty

Danni Williams still has a year of college basketball eligibility left, and she is pretty much a free agent.

Clovis' all-time leading scorer, and the only three-time selection as the Gatorade New Mexico girls player of the year, does not plan to return to Texas A&M next season.

Williams announced on social media she believed, "it is in my best interest to (become a) graduate transfer from Texas A&M. I'm so thankful to have had the amazing opportunity to represent Texas A&M on and off the basketball court these last three years. I'll always be an Aggie."

Under NCAA rules, athletes who transfer schools normally lose a year of eligibility. Williams, however, can use her remaining year without penalty because she will leave College Station with a degree.

Williams finished her last final Friday and will graduate next week with a degree in sport management. She has frequently spoken of desires to coach whenever her playing career ended.

"She never intended to graduate in three years, but by staying active in the summer it put her in a place where she could," said her father, Regan Williams. "She really enjoyed A&M, loved the school. This would provide her an opportunity to do something different."

Regan Williams said once A&M approved a written request for permission to contact other schools, "the phone started blowing up."

Danni has made visits to both UConn and Texas, but stopped making visits out of concerns it was affecting her studies.

Other major schools she's had discussions with are Mississippi State, South Carolina, Louisville, UCLA, Regan Williams said.

"She's just looking for a place that fits her academically and athletically. She really appreciated everything A&M did for her."

Williams was second on the Aggies in scoring with 14.4 points per game and set a school season record with 71 three-pointers. The Aggies this year went 26-10 and reached the Sweet 16, where they fell to eventual national champion Notre Dame.

Proximity to Clovis isn't a major issue, and the plan is to wait until after graduation to announce her next school.
