In state tennis, both the Portales girls and Clovis boys will head to team competition Friday.
The Rams, however, hope to do a little damage before that as well.
Portales’ girls are the No. 4 seed in Class 1A-4A, and will face No. 5 Bosque 10:30 a.m. Friday at Albuquerque Academy. The semifinal and final rounds will be Saturday at Albuquerque Academy, at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Clovis’ boys received the No. 10 seed in Class 6A, and will face Cleveland 8 a.m. Friday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex. Fourth-seeded Carlsbad awaits the winner for a 2 p.m. match. The semifinal and final rounds will be Saturday at Cline at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Singles and doubles competition runs Wednesday and Thursday. Portales has six players competing.
In singles, Sarah Blaeser has a first-round bye Wednesday, and might end up facing teammate Zamorye Cox in the 8 p.m. quarterfinals at Cline. Cox faces Bosque’s Sarah Baca at 3 p.m. at Sierra Vista. Thursday will feature 11 a.m. semifinals and a 4 p.m. championship match at Cline.
Kinsey Bilberry and Kelly Fraze will play in the doubles bracket with a 4:30 p.m. Wednesday match at Sierra Vista against the St. Michael’s pair of Cameron Calabrese and Kyra Chavez. Cline will host the 9:30 a.m. quarterfinals, 12:30 p.m. semifinals and 5:30 p.m. championship on Thursday.
Gerardo Calderon and Javier Gutierrez will face Taos’ Joseph Colonias and Victor Burns 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sierra Vista. Cline will host the 8 a.m. quarterfinals, 12:30 p.m. semifinals and 5:30 p.m. championship on Thursday.
