Kingsville pulls Saturday sweep on ENMU softball

April 15, 2018

PORTALES — One day after a dramatic walk-off hit against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico softball couldn't quite replicate the magic in Saturday's doubleheader home finale. The Javelinas took Game 1, 8-3, followed by a 14-4 Game 2 rout.

In the opening game, Kingsville (24-21, 11-13) scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings respectively. An Anastasia Leibas RBI single up the middle got things going for the Javelinas in the first, before Roxy Chapa's single in the second inning increased the lead to 3-0, bringing home a third Kingsville run. Chapa would then add a two-run homer in the fourth to make it a 6-0 Kingsville lead.

As for Eastern (18-28, 9-18), it didn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning with a Jennifer McElroy two-run single to center field. The Hounds would then add a run in the seventh, but it was too little, too late.

ENMU pitching woes only worsened in Game 2, as Kingsville scored in every inning, except for the top of the sixth. The Javelinas stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, as Leibas drove in two more runs.

Chapa would add an RBI double in the second, while Claire Chernosky drove in two runs in the fourth on a single to right field. Starting pitcher Breanna Smith earned her 14th win of the year, going six innings and striking out four. Kianna Zerr, meanwhile, got chased after two innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, dropping her to 3-3 on the year.

Eastern will finish with five road games to close out the regular season, beginning with a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday afternoon.
