Reporter's notebook: Fighting the good fight

New Mexico is making strides in the fight against prescription painkiller deaths, according to the National Safety Council.

In a recent report, the organization said New Mexico — along with 13 other states and Washington, D.C. — received its highest mark of “improving” in strengthening laws to reduce overdose deaths, according to a press release by the New Mexico Department of Health.

Furthermore, New Mexico was one of only two states to implement six actions to address the opioid epidemic, which include mandating prescriber education and treating opioid overdose.
