1988: The New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau (NMTSB) released information speculating that the increase of the state speed limit to 65 mph the previous year may have been responsible for a 50 percent increase in traffic fatalities.

In an Associated Press story, Howard Graff, chief planner for the NMTSB, said traffic deaths had more than doubled during the first few months after the limit was increased, but had somewhat stabilized during the winter months.

He said New Mexico was the first state to raise its limit. The new law had gone into effect on April 2, 1987.

The 65-mph speed limit covered 945 miles of New Mexico roads.

1983: Ina Wilcher of Dora was one of three new commissioners for the New Mexico State Fair Board appointed by Gov. Toney Anaya.

Wilcher, 47, succeeded Richard Worley of Clovis for a term ending Jan. 1, 1985.

Wilcher and her husband, Donald, were the owners of Wilcher's Farm Store in Dora. The two were also members of the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, the Wheatgrowers Association, and Farmers Union.

In addition, Wilcher had been state president of the New Mexico Democratic Women in 1981-82.
