1988: Forty-three airmen from the Air Base Ground Defense Unit of the 27th Security Police Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base left for Panama. They were to join 10,500 other American military personnel already there as tensions continued to heat up in the country under the leadership of Gen. Manuel Noriega.

Cannon Capt. Mike Kormanik said those leaving were considered on temporary assignment, but that they would stay "as long as needed."

Kormanik said the additional troops were being sent to Panama because of the instability of the government and concern about the safety of United States citizens living in the country.

1973: About 200 high school forensic students were expected on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University for the third annual New Mexico State High School Forensic Association championships.

Competitions were scheduled in eight areas: novice debate, cross examination debate, oratory, men's extemporaneous speaking, women's extemporaneous speaking, dramatic interpretation, oral interpretation, and duo drama.

A number of local citizens had been lined up to help judge, including Portales attorney Fred Thompson, and Clovis attorneys Lyle Walker and Richard Rowley.
