Greyhounds salvage series split

ENMU claims second LSC win

PORTALES — Eastern’s bats came alive to the tune of 15 hits and 12 runs in Saturday’s 12-5 Lone Star Conference baseball victory over Cameron. Nine of the 11 Greyhound batters had at least one hit, as ENMU amassed eight extra base hits on the day.

The Hounds (16-12, 2-6 LSC) got off to a quick start, after opening the game with three runs in the first inning. Endy Villalona scored on a Tyler Garcia wild pitch, before Garlind Webster hit a two-run home run to left field, extending the lead to 3-0, chasing Garcia (0-4) after just 1/3 of an inning.

Cameron (13-18, 3-5) would respond with two runs in the top of the second, after an Albert Moralobo RBI single and an Enrique Perez passed ball. However, ENMU added runs in the second and third, before Cameron answered back with fourth and fifth inning runs to cut the deficit back down to a run, 5-4.

The Hounds’ bats, however, could not be stopped. Eastern added three runs in the sixth on a Malcolm Smith two-run double and an Alex DeLaCruz RBI triple. DeLaCruz would add another RBI triple in the eighth, before Eurick Perez’ three-run blast to right field.

Zach Shank, meanwhile, would lead the Greyhounds with four hits, while DeLaCruz, Nicholas Ankerman and Smith all had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Enrique Perez earned his third win of the year, after going seven innings and striking out seven on 119 pitches. Levi Shandrew struck out four and did not allow a baserunner in the final two innings, as he notched his third save of the season.

ENMU will now embark on a four-game series at Tarleton State, starting Friday at 7 p.m.
