Texico beats Tohatchi for 3A title on last-second shot

ALBUQUERQUE — Maryelle Dickerman had 20 points, including the game-winning layup with five seconds left, and the Texico Wolverines claimed their second Class 3A title in three years with a 48-47 nailbiter win over Tohatchi on Friday at The Pit in Albuquerque.

Junior Baylee Sours scored 14 points and assisted on the winning basket for Texico (28-4), which rallied from an early deficit and withstood a 21-point quarter from the defending champion Cougars (24-7).

Tohatchi took a late 47-46 lead when Brianna Denetso hit a corner 3-pointer, but Texico hurried back down the other end, where Sours found Dickerman in transition. Tohatchi, without a timeout, couldn’t get off a desperation shot in time to prevent Texico’s 11th title in school history.

Kailan Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting, but fouled out in the closing minutes.
