Cleveland edges Clovis in tournament opener

RIO RANCHO — Jaren Jackson allowed one run over six innings, and went 2-for-3 with an RBI single as the Cleveland Storm edged the Clovis Wildcats 3-1 for their first win in four tries to open the Cleveland Invitational on Thursday afternoon.

Senior starter Sebastian Nunez didn’t pitch poorly, but ended up the hard-luck loser for Clovis (4-2)

“We hurt ourselves with walks early,” Clovis coach Richard Cruce said. “We allowed two walks to score in the game.”

Clovis stranded seven runners, and leadoff hitters went 0-for-7 on the day.

“We just didn’t get the big hit at the big time,” Cruce said. “Had our chances, just didn’t get the big hit.”

Clovis scored its lone run on a double by junior Garrett Langrell in the sixth. Senior catcher Jace Piepkorn went 2-for-3 for Clovis.

Clovis continues the tournament with a 12:30 p.m. today contest against Aztec.
