Melrose (25-3) likely to be Class 1A's top seed
MELROSE — The Melrose boys basketball team stampeded to a District 4-1A championship on Saturday night.
The Buffaloes started early and kept rolling late, all the way to an 80-48 win over Grady at Melrose High School. The championship-game win lifted the Buffs to a 25-3 record and in good position ahead of the state-tournament seeding release.
"We should have a good shot at the overall No. 1 seed," Melrose head coach Kevin Lackey said. "So it should be a fun couple weeks."
Melrose had a 19-6 lead over Grady after one period, a 37-17 advantage by halftime. "We played pretty solid D in the first half," Lackey said.
Melrose's Carson Fraze led all scorers with 16 points. It was part of a balanced Buffalo attack that included 13 from Blake DeVaney and 10 each from Tate and Hunter Sorgen.
Lucas Whitehead paced Grady (16-12) with 13 points, followed by Chisholm Rush with 12 and Isaiah Mitchell with 10.
The Bronchos, though, allowed Melrose to hit 30 field goals.
"It was a good win for us," Lackey said.
