Big third quarter propel Bears to win over Clovis boys

ALBUQUERQUE — Third quarters in Albuquerque are just not working out for the Clovis High Wildcats.

Two weeks after suffering a 27-0 third period to District 2-6A favorite Eldorado, the Clovis boys saw fortunes turn against them with La Cueva's 27-15 third quarter Tuesday night. The Wildcat boys rallied to within two, but couldn't quite finish off the comeback as the Bears claimed a 74-59 victory to push Clovis to 0-5 in district.

Siblings Tyler and Derek Aeilts combined for 38 points and six of the eight 3-pointers for La Cueva (13-6, 5-1). Tyler, a senior, scored 22 points while sophomore Derek notched 16 and hit four treys.

"Good first half, we're up five," Clovis coach Scott Robinson said. "I thought the key point of the ballgame was when Jakeem (Wynn, team-high 16 points) picked up his third foul three minutes into the third. He had to come to the bench, and we had to change our defensive matchups. Offensively, we got a little out of rhythm."

Jacob Moon scored 12 for Clovis, 8-12 overall, while post Bryce Cabeldue had 11. Robinson said Cabeldue and sophomore post Ro Morgan had to handle plenty of size from the Bears throughout the evening. Five Bears range between 6-foot-3 and 6-foor-4.

"They had some size advantage on us," Robinson said. "Cabeldue and Morgan had to play a lot of minutes. They had four bigs they were able to rotate, and we don't have much size after Cabeldue and Morgan."

The Wildcats return home Saturday to host Eldorado.
