Update: Oil spill contained in downtown Portales

PORTALES — Police in Portales asked motorists avoid the areas of First and Second streets from Abilene to Boulder avenues because of an oil spill early Thursday morning.

Police spokesman Charlie Smart said workers are sanding the area, but travel is hazardous.

A city of Portales news release said:

"There has been a mineral oil spill in the downtown area. Please slow down to below 15 mph on (Highway) 70 from C to Brazos. Please avoid Abilene from Commercial to 3rd. Please find an alternate route to the Junior High. Traffic control and clean up are in progress. Please watch for workers and emergency personnel."

The city reported the spill had been contained at 2:51 p.m. and cleanup would continue Friday.

A press release from J.D. Heiskell and Co. reports vandals broke into the facility, stole tools and opened a valve in the maintenance building that caused the oil spill — which leaked within the facility before draining off site.

The company notes the oil should not be ingested, and advises anybody who comes into contact with the mineral oil flush their eyes thoroughly, wash skin with soap and water and wash any clothing that may have come into contact with the substance.

The company also advises any motorist whose vehicle came into contact with the oil should wipe down the area with warm water and mild detergent, then dispose of the rag and wash the car at any commercial car wash.

Concerns may be addressed to JDH General Manager Dean McIntosh at 806-681-5974.
