Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ROSWELL — By head coach Scott Robinson's own admission, Tuesday night's overtime road win at Goddard wasn't a work of art.
But, the Wildcats did get the job done, rallying to tie in regulation before winning in OT by a 46-44 count. As a result, Clovis moved over .500 (8-7) while halting its recent losing streak at two.
"A win's a win," Robinson said. "I guess they're all pretty at the end of the night when you can come away with one. So it got a lot prettier at the end."
Clovis trailed 41-39 with just seven seconds left in the fourth quarter after a Goddard free throw. The in-bounds pass came to Wildcats senior guard Jakeem Wynn, who dribbled coast-to-coast for a game-tying layup.
"(That) got us to overtime and kind of gave us a shot in the arm," Robinson said. "We took the momentum into overtime and were able to do just enough in the overtime to come away with the win."
"Just enough" was Clovis outscoring Goddard 5-3 in the extra period. There were three points by Wynn — on a field goal and free throw — and a field goal from Morgan. Defensively, the Wildcats prevented Goddard from hitting anything from the field; the Rockets' three points came from the foul line.
"We got a few stops," Robinson said, "and were able to convert on the other end."
The game was close, but as Robinson continually pointed out, not one for the film archives.
"It was an ugly game," he said. "Neither team could get rhythm. Both teams struggled offensively. It wasn't a game for the fans — running up and down with great offense."
But the Wildcats bagged it, led by Wynn's game-high 21 points. They now get a week off before beginning District 2-6A next Tuesday at Eldorado, after the Martin Luther King Day weekend.
"It'll be good to have a week to prepare and give our kids a chance to rest," Robinson said. "Our kids need time off. They had a good run of games during Christmas break ... so we need the chance to rest and get prepared."
