Grant aids Portales district's GRADS effort

January 10, 2018

PORTALES — About $27,000 is heading to Portales Municipal Schools for its expecting-parent program.

Superintendent Johnnie Cain told board members Monday that a $101,798 grant the district applied for in September will be split two ways: $27,000 to the district’s Graduation, Reality, and Dual-Role Skills (GRADS) program, and over $70,000 to hire a home liaison counselor at Portales High School.

The GRADS funding was appropriated after the state eliminated a grant specifically for the program, Cain said.

“They were able to get that money, and they put it out for schools that had been on GRADS to apply,” he said.

Cain said the district may hire the liaison counselor as soon as possible.

Also at Monday’s meeting:

• Board member Inez Rodriguez was recognized for receiving the Exemplary Board Member Award from the New Mexico School Boards Association in November.

• A donation of $3,000 — $1,000 to the James, Valencia, and Lindsey-Steiner Elementary School libraries — by the Portales Senior Center was approved.

• The Portales Junior High School band and choir were approved for travel to the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo May 4.
