LOVINGTON — Clovis' girls basketball team played great defense, holding Lovington to single digits in each of the first three quarters, and came away from Tuesday night's road game with a 46-26 blowout victory.
The Lady Wildcats, as a result, evened their record at 2-2.
Clovis held Lovington to 4, 4 and 6 points, respectively, across those first three periods, while playing enough offense to take a comfortable lead. But not as much offense as head coach Jeff Reed would've liked.
"You know the sad thing is, I think we could've won by more," Reed said. "We had a lot of missed opportunities. The first half we really got after Lovington, but we didn't take advantage. It was nice to be up 26-8 at halftime, but ... we didn't take care of opportunities we had to really pour it on them. ... I just felt like offensively we could've done some more damage.
"I thought we did a great job defensively," Reed added, "but offensively we had too many rushed shots. I like the fact that we had really even, balanced scoring, I just wish it could've been more."
As it was, Clovis did have that 26-8 halftime edge Reed referred to, and a 36-14 lead after three quarters.
The Wildcats' Brittni Chavez led all scorers with 12 points, including three treys.
Teya Morris and Madison Tolbert joined Chavez in double figures, each contributing 10 points.
Clovis will play Las Cruces-Onate today in the Rio Rancho Tournament.
Clovis boys fall to Cavemen
CARLSBAD - Clovis' boys basketball team got off to a solid start at Carlsbad Tuesday night, but ultimately fell 61-48 to the Cavemen.
It was the Wildcats' third straight loss, dropping them to 1-4.
Clovis was in decent shape after one quarter, leading Carlsbad 11-10. But the second quarter proved to be a momentum-shifter, as the Cavemen outscored the 'Cats 21-8, and stayed in control from there.
"We were flat tonight," Clovis head coach Scott Robinson said, "just didn't come out with the same urgency that we came out with last weekend. I think that was the difference in the game. We just didn't come out with enough urgency."
Dewayne Dawson led Clovis with 11 points.
The Wildcats will compete in the Academy Tournament in Albuquerque and play Las Cruces today.
