Thankful for blessings great and small

On a long weekend set aside to give thanks, it’s definitely a good time to take stock of my blessings.

I’m thankful always for my loving wife of 35 years. She loves me in spite of all my faults, picks me up when I’m down and shares the good and the bad in my life.

I’m extremely blessed that the Lord has left her in my life through several health scares, including another one this fall.

She has not had it easy as far as health from a life-long autoimmune disease to accidents that have nearly taken her life. The heart attack this fall seemed pretty tame compared to other problems.

I’m blessed that she’s always been a fighter and takes up the challenge and keeps on going as best she can. The struggles have made us closer and in some instances have bestowed us with blessings. I’ve tried to make more time for the two of us, though I’m sure she would like even more.

I guess sometimes God has to remind us what is really important in life. Some folks, like yours truly, believe we’re in control until he shows us we’re really not.

I’m thankful that I have never gone hungry in my life. On the contrary, my gluttony should be one of the things I’m ashamed of, for my own health if no other reason. I still love to eat, though, and I don’t stop often enough to think about everything that goes into putting that food on my table.

I’m thankful to live in a town that is home to the 27th Special Operations Wing. They’re the bravest and most talented men and women I’ve ever had the opportunity to be around in my life. We’re all blessed that they stood up and said “send me” when our country called for people to carry the fight afar to our enemies.

I’m awed and appreciative of all those folks from Cannon that were away from family this Thanksgiving because duty called.

I’m thankful for my dogs. I’m not sure how they could always be so happy to see me in the evening. Some evenings I don’t come home in that great a mood.

I’m thankful for the way I was raised. Learning to work hard and appreciate the rewards of earning your own way. Learning to be proud of your family and friends and ready to quietly give of your means without questioning when they need your help.

Finally, and most importantly, I’m thankful that I serve a risen Savior and that he’s with me all the time. I could never afford the gift of his salvation; I couldn’t work it off with him even if I could do it with a thousand years on earth.

He gave it to me, free for the taking, and I am blessed.
