PORTALES — Residents took to the streets with trash bags in hand for the Toss No Mas highway cleanup on Saturday.

Seven member of the Portales Rotary Club walked up and down US 70 between mile 425 and 426 to clean up trash.

Rotary club member and Roosevelt County Treasurer Layle Sanchez took part in the cleanup to help improve the community.

"We want to try to help our community look better and obviously this is one way to get it done because it looks pretty bad," Sanchez said. "When you drive by it's not as bad, you don't really notice it, but when you stop and you start walking in it, you're like, 'Oh my gosh, people.'"

Sanchez said between the seven Rotary Club members they cleaned up about 25 bags of trash just along that mile stretch of US 70.

"That's a lot of trash," Sanchez said.

Darrell Roe, an assistant professor of communications at Eastern New Mexico University and fellow rotary club member, said he wanted to help out the community and that if more people did so, perhaps the roads would not get so dirty to begin with.

"Everybody should pitch in and maybe if you do this a while, maybe you won't throw trash on the road," Roe said. "It will break you of that habit for sure because I've thought about that every time I want to throw something out the window, somebody's got to go pick that up."

Portales City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry said members of the Caduceus Health Society from Eastern New Mexico University also took part in the cleanup event.

Martinez-Terry said Toss No Mas is one of two road cleanup events the city puts on every year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

Don Nickels said the Rotary Club takes part in the two cleanups each year.

"We like doing it because it helps everybody have a clean highway," Nickels said.
