Workshop to offer tips on selling music

CLOVIS — If you’ve ever wanted to sell your own music, Thursday’s workshop at the Norman & Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum might be for you.

Jose Antonio Ponce of the New Mexico Music Awards and Jason’s Music Publishing has teamed up with the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce for a free music workshop on copyright, publishing and licensing music.

Ponce’s presentation will give an overview on the importance of copyright and show attendees how to publish and license their own music for film and television projects, according to a Chamber press release.

“We just thought that it would be an added benefit to people around here. You can actually learn the trade and what requires you to keep your music safe and your intellectual property safe,” said Ariana Terns, event coordinator for the Chamber.

Terns said she thought the workshop was a good fit for Clovis based on the city’s history with rock ‘n’ roll music.

“It fits with our local heritage,” Terns said.

According to the press release, Ponce has worked on projects including the film “Sicario” and the television show “Better Call Saul” among others, and has assisted in casting musicians for movies including “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” and “The Lone Ranger.”

“Licensing is where the money is,” Terns said will be one of the many tips Ponce will give to attendees during the workshop.

The workshop is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and will take place at the Norman & Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum located downstairs from the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce at 105 E Grand Ave. in Clovis.
