Regional football roundup: Melrose, Dora win in routs

Local eight-man teams won convincingly Friday night, Texico lost a nailbiter and other area teams were less fortunate.

Dora 50, Springer 6

For the Dora Coyotes, the game was ran through junior quarterback Bradley Ramirez during their match-up with Springer Friday night.

With five starters being out this week, head coach Mason McBee needed someone to fill in the position at quarterback for Dora (4-2) and Ramirez had a week to learn the offense.

Ramirez clearly learned enough. He had two quick rushing touchdowns in the first quarter after Springer (1-4) added the first six points of the game on the board. Ramirez also added one more early in the second.

“He did very well stepping in as QB,” said Dora head coach Mason McBee of Ramirez. “He used his week to get the offense down and he did a great job Friday. Also with the rain delaying our game a bit, the fields were sloppy and the ball was wet, but he did a great job executing when most people struggle in that area.”

Ramirez had three rushing touchdowns and threw three touchdown passes in their 50-6 win. Dorareturns to action next week as they visit Mountainair at 7 p.m.

Melrose 58, Mountainair 8

With a 4-0 record coming in, Mountainair may have looked like a bump in the road for the Buffaloes. Melrose thought otherwise.

Melrose (6-0) came out with an early 20-8 lead as the clock ended in the first quarter, after the defense pitched a shutout from there.

Melrose will be returning home as it hosts Logan on Friday at 7 p.m.

Post 50, Farwell 24

The Farwell Steers couldn’t find answers quickly enough in their matchup against Post, and when the Steers’ offense found momentum it was too late.

Post (5-1) came out with a late rushing touchdown in the first quarter after both teams struggled to put any points on the board. With eight minutes to go in the second, Farwell (2-3) answered back with a touchdown pass from Ethan Stancell to John Mitchell to tie the game at eight a piece.

Post’s Octavius Jackson added a 36 yard touchdownjust 23 seconds later.

Farwell was unable to answer until late in the fourth.

Clayton 7, Texico 6

With Texico having a significant amount of starters out, the Wolverines kept the game close in their 7-6 loss against Clayton.

“With our young guys stepping in they played very well at times and other times they missed opportunities,” said Texico’s head coach Pat Crowley. “We kinda threw them into the fire with our starters out, but they are learning and going to continue learning.”

Crowley looks to change the defense to fit the offense this week to prepare the young guys a little better. Texico (1-6) visits Santa Rosa on Friday at 7 p.m.

Roy/Mosquero 37, Floyd 20

Floyd visited Roy/Mosquero on Friday to hopefully get another win for the books, but Roy/Mosquero didn’t allow them to get anywhere this game in Floyd’s 37-20 loss. Floyd (1-4) hosts Lake Arthur 3 p.m. Friday.
