H.S. football season heads into October

CLOVIS — As the season quickly winds down, area teams have either started or are about to start district play.

Melrose at Mountainair 7 p.m.

In this Melrose and Mountainair match-up, it looks to be a battle on who can remain undefeated. Melrose (5-0) is coming off of a 56-6 win over Dora, but Melrose looks to have a bit of a test as Mountainair (4-0) could possibly be a bump in the road.

The Mustangs are coming off of a 50-0 win over Mescalero Apache.

“They have a lot of speed on their offense, which is why they’re beating everyone the way they are,” said Melrose head coach Dickie Roybal. “They are very physical just like your typical Mountainair team, and they do have a lot of size, so we are going to try and stop that early on.”

Roybal added that he looks to use a lot of motion and jet sets on offense early to hopefully get a run on the Mustangs.

“Since we changed our offense up in this part of the season everything is flowing nicely,” Roybal said. “I am very pleased with the way my kids are looking in this part of the season.”

Springer at Dora, 7 p.m.

After coming off their loss against Melrose last week, Dora looks to bounce back tonight, but coach Mason McBee said the team is still missing some key players.

Prior to the Melrose game, Dora (3-2) lost a few key players in their match-up against Gateway Christian. With those guys still out a couple of more weeks due to their injuries, McBee is focusing on being healthy for the playoffs.

“I am going to use my young guys this game against Springer,” McBee said. “I am going to make sure my starters are healthy and sit them out a couple of more games and let these guys gain experience. If we are going to have to lose a couple of games that’s fine, but I saw how my young guys played against Melrose, so I’m not concerned about Springer too much.”

Springer (1-3) is coming off of a 54-0 win over Northwest, but Dora looks to bring in their young backfield and take the win over Springer.

Farwell at Post, 6:30 p.m. (MDT)

The Farwell Steers are looking to be back in action after making some adjustments in their recent bye week that followed a close loss against Sundown.

According to Farwell head coach Danny Brittain, the Steers (2-2) worked on perfecting their passing game this week to get passed the Post defense.

“They have a lot of size on their defensive line that we really need to slow down,” said Brittain. “Their nose guard is probably the best defensive lineman we’re going to face, so we are going to minimize the run game and get better in the air and wear them out.”

Post (4-1) is coming off of a 39-6 win over Slaton and look to use their running game in this one. “Their backfield is really good,” Brittain added. We just need to break down their offense and make our stops on defense.”

Texico at Clayton, 7 p.m.

After Texico’s loss to Capitan last week, the Wolverines (1-5) look to make some small adjustments due to a couple of injuries and use their run game in tonight’s match-up against Clayton (0-6).

The Yellowjackets are coming off a 61-7 loss against Elkhart.

“With the injury bug still on us, the adjustments we’ve made are coming together very well on offense and our defensive chemistry is still there,” said Texico coach Pat Crowley. “They have a solid defense and a couple of linebackers that we’ll have to watch, but we’re going to run the ball more to gain the yards.”

Floyd at Roy/Mosquero, 6 p.m.

The Floyd Broncos are entering their matchup against Roy/Mosquero after coming off of a huge 34-0 shutout win over the Hondo Valley Eagles which made that their first win of the season.

Floyd (1-3) looks to capitalize on offense as Roy/Mosquero (0-4; 0-2 district) has allowed 176 points on defense, with no answer back on any opponent they’ve faced. While Floyd has allowed 167 points on their defense this season, the Broncos look to carry their momentum from their match-up with Hondo and get another win for the books.
