Woman charged after police standoff

CLOVIS — A five-hour standoff with Clovis police ended about 9 p.m. Wednesday with one arrest but no injuries.

A news release from Clovis police showed Maria Martinez, 60, was arrested at 8:46 p.m., charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct.

She was transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center.

Police said the incident began at 3:38 p.m. Wednesday near 11th and Sheldon streets.

Witnesses said a woman stepped out of her home, “yelled for some to not ‘mess’ with her,” and discharged a firearm before returning to the home.

“We got her out,” a police officer said as he left the scene about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The news release said officers entered the woman’s home after multiple attempts to contact her and found her “standing in the kitchen.”

She was arrested without further incident, the news release said.
