Clovis boys finish second at Ron Singleton Invitational

CARLSBAD — Outside of 6A powerhouse Hobbs, there hasn’t been a team in New Mexico the Clovis High boys cross country team faced and came away with defeat.

The same proved true of Texas teams, as Clovis had three of the top 12 runners in the Ron Singleton Invitational’s 62-runner field Saturday morning at Carlsbad.

The Wildcats got a third-place finish from John Fuentes (17:21), seventh from Jose Salas (17:44) and 12th from Jerrick Maldonado (18:04) to finish in a comfortable second place with 55 points to Lovington’s 87.

Hobbs had Patrick Colborn take medalist honors (16:23) and posted five of the meet’s top 10 runners to finish with 25 points.

“That’s pretty standard for them,” Clovis coach Mark Bussen said. “They’re defending state champions two times, and if we’re running with them we’re in the hunt for a trophy.

“They beat us by about 60 points at our place three weeks ago, and they beat us by 30 today.”

The girls, meanwhile, finished fourth for the second-consecutive year, with Kelsey McNaughton taking third place at 20:33.

“It was really hot,” Bussen said. “The kids, I thought we ran pretty well. Kelsey beat a few girls she hadn’t beat this year. She ran a really good race.”

Clovis was without Karli Windham, who was held out for a hip issue.

“The kids ran pretty tough,” Bussen said. “It was a tough day, and we knew it was going to be competitive.”

The Lady Cats scored 92 points to fall just behind Lovington (90). Hereford won the meet with 40 points. The individual winner was Mitzy Madrid of Hobbs at 19:42, as she helped her team finish sixth.

Other runners for the Clovis boys inclued Bryce Lentz (15th, 18:20), P.J. Gregg (19th, 18:28), Dominic Moreno (26th, 18:53) and Kevin Deeley (33rd, 19:29).

Kannon Brooks took top honors in the junior varsity race, finishing at 19:30 to top 96 other runners.

Clovis heads to Santa Fe on Saturday.
