Buffs roll to victory against Mancos

ALBUQUERQUE — Senior quarterback Sterling Sena threw for three touchdowns and ran for two on Friday as Melrose cruised to a 48-0 victory over Mancos, Colorado. The neutral-site game was played at Menaul High School.

Sena had scoring runs of 40 and 10 yards in the first quarter. He threw TD passes of 40 yards to senior Hunter Sorgen and sophomore Tristan Sena in the third quarter, and finished the scoring with a 75-yard TD pass to senior Jordan Jasso early in the final period.

The Buffaloes’ other touchdown came on a 3-yard run by senior Carson Fraze in the second period.

Melrose (2-0) tacked on all six 2-point conversions — the first three on passes from Sterling Sena to Jasso and the last three on runs by Fraze.

Buffs coach Dickie Roybal, whose team beat the Bluejays 20-12 in last year’s meeting at Menaul, said Mancos (1-1) lost its starting quarterback to a broken hand in last week’s season opener and had four other players go down in this game.

“The score doesn’t indicate the way the game was played,” Roybal said. “Going into the game, we knew they were big and physical. We executed well for the most part, and our defense is playing well.”

Melrose returns to action on Friday night when it hosts Tatum.
