1972: Clovis Municipal Schools reported an enrollment of 9,108 1/2 students for the opening of the 1972-73 school year.

Fortunately, no Wildcats were injured to achieve that count. The Clovis News-Journal explained that the one-half student was the result of the evening high school, where students were counted according to the number of classes they took.

An evening student taking one class, for example, counted as one-fourth of a student. Thirty-five and one-half students were enrolled in the evening program.

1962: At a meeting earlier this week, the Portales City Council finalized bid selection for construction of a new City Hall in Portales, according to United Press International.

Briggs and Williams Co. of Clovis had the winning bid of $142,914, but the contract was accepted as contingent on the city's ability to raise the additional $42,914 from the sale of water bonds.

Portales councilors had hoped to spend an even $100,000 for the project.
