Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Locals share good and bad of employment

On Monday, we celebrate work.

On Labor Day weekend, we asked area residents to tell us about their best jobs ... and their worst.

• Portales resident Ricardo Salazar said he misses the benefits of working at Dairy Farmers of America, which included “401(k), vision, dental. You got all that good stuff.”

Additionally, the job only required him to work two weeks out of the month. While the shifts were 12 hours long, he still recalls his time there fondly.

• As a teacher at Brown Early Childhood Center, Stacy Gossett of Portales found herself most at home teaching kindergarten-age students.

“They kept you entertained. Never a dull moment. They keep you on your toes,” she said.

Gossett’s favorite memory of the job was the look on the students’ faces when they learn something new like “tying their shoes. That’s the most awesome thing, when they can tie their shoes.”

• Kevin Brown of Clovis didn’t have as positive an experience working as a fast-food clerk when he was 15.

“Back then, I just didn’t like the manager,” he said.

He knew it was the worst job he had ever worked when he was “getting $5.15 for minimum wage and dealing with attitudes from the people you work for and the customers.”

• Pushing carts at a warehouse retailer was an unpleasant experience for Clovis resident Jeremy Bivens, who began working for the company because his friends worked there.

“When I got hired, they got fired. I got a job I didn’t even want to do. I did that for like a month and a half, two months, and then I just left. I didn’t even put in my two weeks’ notice, I just kind of dipped out,” he said.

• Landscaping gave Jason Glick of Clovis so much pleasure, he’s returned to it more than once.

“I don’t like to sit down. I don’t like desk jobs, so it definitely helped on that. It was a really good job. Not so much the heat, because it’s hot,” he said.

The people he worked with were another of the job’s attractions.

“I’’m really charismatic. I’m a people person. There was this one lady, she was really nice. She was out there chatting with us, wanting to give us water. It’s Clovis, so we’re all together.”
