Portales recovers to top Goddard in four sets

PORTALES — The Portales Lady Rams recovered quickly after dropping the first set on Tuesday to win their season opener over Goddard, beating the Lady Rockets 21-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-18 at the Ram Athletic Center.

Senior Lindsey Blakey collected 13 kills and three blocks for the Lady Rams, while senior Jessie Campbell added nine kills and five of the team’s 15 aces.

Second-year PHS coach Charity Gomez said her team settled down after the first set.

“You’re nervous and in front of the home crowd,” she said of the opener. “But once we got in the flow, I thought (the girls) stayed really calm and never panicked.”

Goddard pulled away late in the first set, but Lady Rams quickly took control in the second and evened things up.

“We came out and served lights-out,” Gomez said of Game 2. “That’s what we were focusing on.”

Goddard erased a four-point lead late in the third set to grab a 24-23 lead, but the Lady Rams rallied with four of the final five points. They then dominated again in the final set.

Gomez said her team did a good job in the serve-receive game.

“That’s what we were focusing on,” she said. “I told (the team) that whoever wins the serve-receive game was probably going to win (the match).”

Portales hits the road for the first time on Thursday, playing at Roswell High.
