'Fill the Boot' event this weekend

CLOVIS — Firefighters will be at select intersections and businesses this weekend and Aug. 18-20, collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Clovis Fire Department’s annual “Fill the Boot” fundraising event has run since at least 2000, said firefighter Charles Nunez.

Since then the highest yearly donation from CFD to MDA was $19,000; this year the goal is to break $20,000, though firefighters hope to raise as much as $25,000, Nunez said.

“This is pretty much the biggest charity that firefighters are known for,” he said. “Something we’d like for the public to know that we can’t stress enough is that every single penny, every dollar is going straight to MDA.”

CFD will man five intersections in the city at various times during the two weekends, with road signs marking the donation sites: 21st and Martin Luther King; 14th and Norris; First and Prince; 21st and Prince; 14th and Mitchell.
