See techniques for decorating your cupcakes


Information on ridding your house of a snake, decorating cakes and cupcakes, and creating “green” decor will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.)

Ray Pawley is a retired zoologist, and if you happen to find a snake in your house, he has some good tips for getting rid of it. He’ll show how to catch a snake and how to ensure your house is rodent and snake proof. Pawley lives in Hondo.

Nancy Siler represents Wilton Brands in Woodridge, Illinois, and she’s going to show how to do a variety of techniques that make decorating cupcakes, cookies and other delicacies even easier. This includes ways to fill a cupcake, how to spatula ice a cupcake and even how to make various swirl designs.

Designer and crafter Shannon Bielke will show how to take items around the house and incorporate them into new creations or what she calls “green décor.” Bielke’s company is Sha & Co. in Payson, Arizona.

Information on creating relic boxes, making candy bark treats, and new products for relieving stress will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at noon and on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Crafter Marisa Pawelko will show how to create relic boxes, which are miniature time capsules that can capture special memories for any occasion. They are also considered three dimensional scrapbooks, and are great conversation starters, too. Her company is Modern Surrealist LLC. and she’s from Winfield, Illinois.

Nancy Siler is going to demonstrate making whimsical and elegant treats featuring candy bark made with candy melts and numerous embellishments. Siler is with Wilton Brands in Woodridge, Illinois.

Laura Dellutri is a life and style expert with Healthy Housekeeper, Inc., and she’s going to show some new products on the market that just might make your life more stress free. These include a Shiatsu pillow, a foot bath, a sound spa, and a single-serving coffeemaker – just to name a few. Dellutri lives in Overland Park, Kansas.

Regal rainbow ruffle cake

Step 1:

Make cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cake. Cake is three-layers. Trim one layer to 1 inch high for a 5 inch high tier. Place on foil-wrapped cake circle.

Step 2:

Decorate cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint icing in colors of your choice. Position cake on turntable for decorating. Use spatula and 1 color of icing to ice cake smooth. Use tip #104 and a darker icing to pipe ruffle, beginning at bottom border and then around cake. Move tip up 3/8 inch. Use tip #104 and a lighter color of icing to pipe a second ruffle, moving tip up 3/8 inch. Repeat, alternating icing colors to pipe rows of ruffles, and cover cake sides. On cake top, begin at the outside edge and pipe ruffle around top. Move tip in 3/8 inch, repeat piping alternating colors to cover cake top.
