Man gets 18 months for role in robbery

CLOVIS — A Clovis man will serve 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to a role in the robbery of a car wash in June 2015.

Isaiah Carver, 23, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit armed robbery, as well as failure to appear in court after being originally charged in connection with the crime.

Carver was initially charged with armed robbery for allegedly stealing approximately $300 by knifepoint from a local car wash owner on June 23, 2015.

That charge was revised after a criminal investigation came up with contradictory reports that left doubt as to Carver's role in the robbery.

"In my opinion, any involvement in that is completely unacceptable," said Judge Drew Tatum, who advised Carver to think twice before continuing with a "life of crime."

Carver faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted by a jury. Instead, he entered a plea agreement last week and was sentenced Monday to 18 months of incarceration - with credit granted for 258 days in custody prior to sentencing - followed by three years of supervised probation.

Tatum denied Carver's request at sentencing for a weeklong furlough before incarceration to visit his hospitalized younger brother.

Tatum said he respected Carver's request but has been "burned way too many times" but convicts fleeing incarceration in the past.

"I think the Clovis Police Department did an excellent job with this investigation and this was an appropriate solution," said Brian Stover, who represented the state's prosecution.

Carver's public defender Brett Carter was not immediately available for comment Monday.
