Editor’s note: This is one in a series of profiles about graduating high school seniors in the area.

Melissa Davalos plans on attending Eastern New Mexico University and majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it and why?

My favorite quote would have to be “Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” by Saint Pope John Paul II. It reminds me to always be courageous and to continuously strive for nothing less than greatness.

What is your funniest memory from high school?

My funniest memory from high school would have to be the time where we were at state FFA (Future Farmers of America) in Las Cruces and Jackson Tuls flushed the toilet in his bathroom and flooded the entire hotel hallway.

Mason Golden’s plans are to attend ENMU and pursue a degree in education and coaching, while playing football for the Greyhounds.

What are your hobbies outside of school?

My hobbies outside of school are hanging out with friends.

What was your proudest moment in high school?

My proudest moment in high school was beating out our rival, the Santa Rosa Lions, in football my junior and senior year.

Madalynn Sealey plans on attending Texas Tech University to pursue a major in pre-medicine, with an emphasis in cell and molecular biology.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it and why?

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11. This Bible verse has guided me through high school and has helped me stay positive and keep hope for a successful future.

What is your funniest memory from high school?

My funniest memory is from my freshman year when our FFA chapter was at state judging in Las Cruces. I was having a nervous breakdown in our hotel room; I accidentally punched our maid when she walked in the door to exchange our towels.

Lance Myers plans to attend West Texas A&M University to major in electrical engineering.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it and why?

My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28. This verse reads, “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

I believe that this scripture empowers me to always keep fighting and have hope, no matter what circumstance I might find myself in. Adversity and trials build character. I continually have to remind myself of this, and then I have hope and strength to move forward.

What is your funniest memory from high school?

My funniest memory from high school is definitely saying pledges and announcements with (fellow student) Mel my senior year on a daily basis. For many of the days, we would find the corniest, cheesiest jokes to say on the intercom. No matter how funny the joke actually was, we both would still laugh until we were out of breath.

Kyleigh Bridges plans to attend Eastern New Mexico University and pursue a degree in secondary education.

Who has been your favorite teacher and how did they better you as a person?

I have had two teachers who have had a big influence on me. My English teacher, Mrs. Kibbe, and my FCCLA advisor, Mrs. Thomas.

Mrs. Kibbe has always pushed me to do my best, and she is the reason I want to be an English teacher. Mrs. Thomas has always believed in me and has forced me outside of my comfort zone. Both teachers have always been there for me, and I know I can count on either of them at any time.

What is the most important lesson you learned in high school?

The most important lesson I learned in high school is to cherish every moment you have and to not wish for high school to be over. As a freshman, I couldn't wait for the school year to be over, and each school week, I would look forward to the weekend. Now as a senior with just one month until graduation, I regret wishing my high school time away. I now treasure every day I have with my friends and my teachers, because I know that after graduation, I won't see my friends every day. One of the best things about high school is the friendships you make, so treasure them for as long as you can.

Kolten Virgil Wines plans are to join the United States Army.

I leave Aug. 14 for basic training.

What did you learn from high school?

I learned that life can be precious, and we don't need to take it for granted. When I'm gone, I'm gonna miss my friends and family. Nothing else.
