Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
PRMC celebrates free meal program
CLOVIS — Plains Regional Medical Center has celebrated its inaugural year of offering free meals and snacks to children visiting the hospital, according to a PRMC release.
The hospital, as part of a partnership with the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service Southwest Region, provided 2,985 meals between February 2016 and February 2017.
“At Plains Regional Medical Center, we want to do what we can to help the children of Curry County,” PRMC Administrator Vince DiFranco said in the release. “This is a great way for us to serve our community — we hope many more kids will join us at the hospital for free, healthy meals in 2017.”
Between four Presbyterian hospitals in the state —two in Albuquerque and one in Socorro —the program has provided more than 6,425 meals.
Portales businesses awarded grants
PORTALES — Three businesses in downtown Portales have been awarded the Façade Grant Improvement Program to help fund improvements to their buildings.
Portales MainStreet Executive Director Sandy Vigil said in a press release that seven businesses applied for the grant this year, totaling more than $6,500 in requests and $20,000 in overall project estimates. The grant awarded $3,000 to Pebsworth Insurance, Robert’s TV & Appliance and Your Yoga Place, and business improvements are to be complete by June.
Robert’s TV & Appliance will replace their signage and lighting that is over 14 years old.
The program is sponsored by US Bank, Wells Fargo and Attorney Eric D. Dixon, the release said.

Energy company to host meet in Portales
PORTALES — A Houston-based energy company will be hosting an industry meet and greet Wednesday in Portales.
After two years of discussion, Natural Chem Group purchased the former Abengoa bioenergy plant in the Portales Industrial Park in November 2016 after the company went bankrupt.
Natural Chem President Robert Salazar said in November the facility will blend biodiesel fuel and will also include a fueling station at which two commercial trucks can fuel up at one time.
The company also purchased land in the Clovis Industrial Park the end of 2015 for a plant to manufacture the biodiesel fuel.
Natural Chem officials are hosting a meet and greet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mark’s Restaurant in Portales.
Salazar said Monday that the event is “a really good introductory session” to introduce products, pricing, hours of operation and more regarding the Portales facility, which he said the company expects to be operational the end of May.
“We are hoping to meet with a number of the industrial users of biodiesel and give them information about the EcoFuels terminal that we will be operating in Portales,” Salazar said. “This is going to be the only terminal like that within a 100 mile radius, so it will make it easier on companies.”
He said until the Clovis plant opens next year, the blending facility in Portales will get its biodiesel from the Clinton Biodiesel Plant in Clinton, Iowa, which is also owned by Natural Chem.
